Empowering Rural Farmers and Youth: A Sustainable Agriculture Project in Buea Municipality

Buea municipality in Cameroon faces challenges in agriculture and youth unemployment. The region has a high percentage of subsistence farmers and is vulnerable to climate change impacts. To address these issues, a project is being launched in five village communities. It aims to establish Community Centers/Area Cooperative Enterprises (ACE) through farming schooling groups, benefiting 750 farmers.

Project Objectives:

  1. Enhancing Agricultural Technologies: By promoting climate-smart practices, affordable irrigation services, and water harvesting, the project seeks to improve productivity, reduce poverty, and ensure food security.

  2. Empowering Youth in Agriculture: Through skill development in agribusiness, entrepreneurship, and modern technology, the project aims to attract young people to agriculture, fostering rural transformation and employment opportunities.

Approach and Impact:

The project utilizes the farming schooling group model to build technical and entrepreneurial capacities among community enterprises. This enables them to provide valuable extension services, contributing to economic transformation, food security, and poverty alleviation. By addressing climate change challenges and youth unemployment, this sustainable agriculture project aims to create a brighter future for rural farmers and empower the next generation to drive agricultural innovation and economic growth.
